Frequently asked questions
About us
We've been hearing a lot about sleep apnea lately. Is it a fad?
No, it’s not a fad. Certainly, this sleep disorder has always existed. However, in recent years, sleep apnea has become much better known in the medical world, which means that doctors are more alert to the problem. This explains the growing number of people being diagnosed.
A CPAP... What is it used for?
First of all, CPAP is an acronym for “Continuous Positive Airway Pressure”. In French, the appropriate term is PPC, for “Pression positive continue”. This acronym refers to a small air compressor used to deliver continuous positive airway pressure, keeping the airways open during sleep. Scientifically, this is the most effective treatment for sleep apnea. It should be noted that this device does not deliver oxygen, but only air pressure. It is possible, however, to add oxygen by pairing the CPAP with a device designed for this purpose.
Sleep apnea: is it a fatal disease?
There is no scientific evidence that sleep apnea is fatal. Rather, it is the consequences of sleep apnea that can contribute to an increased risk of mortality. For every untreated case of sleep apnea, there is an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, depression, motor vehicle accidents, and so on.
Can you suffer from a sleep disorder even if you don't snore?
Snoring is not the only symptom of a sleep disorder. In fact, many people with respiratory sleep disorders (e.g. sleep apnea) do not snore. There are over 80 sleep disorders, and for most of them, snoring is not a variable to be considered. For example, a person may suffer from restless legs syndrome, which causes sleep fragmentation, but without the presence of snoring. For this reason, if you think you have a sleep disorder, but you don’t snore, it’s time to talk to us, or contact your doctor to arrange a screening test.
I don't feel like I'm getting a good night's sleep. I'd like to solve my problem. Where do I start?
First, we invite you to schedule an appointment with one of our sleep specialists to complete a screening questionnaire. Based on the results, we’ll let you know whether or not you should undergo a sleep study. If so, you can then consult your doctor with the results of the questionnaire, who will prescribe a sleep study to accurately diagnose your sleep disorder.
